Modern Hanok Living

Modern Hanok Living | Dream Spaces | TraveshopaINSPIRATION: HOMEDESIGNING

Hanok, the traditional Korean style of housing for over a hundred years, is a splendid work of architecture. According to the locals, its charming structure and design are carefully planned and intuitively guided by nature and science. Every material used in building this iconic structure is from nature. Stone, earth, paper, wood, and oil make up the hanok – all directly from natural, indigenous sources.  Its trademark heated rock system called the “ondol” is a scientific breakthrough; not only does it combat the biting cold during wintertime, it also treats illnesses.

Fast forward to 2016, the people of South Korea are not the only ones making major makeovers, hanoks are also getting modern updates. As shown by Seoul-based interior designer, Jung wook Han, the key to seamlessly merging housing traditions and modern aesthetics is by marrying natural light and soft colour palettes. The result is minimalist chic, without compromising comfort and functionality.

Korean Cutie

OK… so… we confess we’re more than a little crazy about Daehan, Minguk, and Manse from Korean hit show The Return of Superman! Mischievous as they are, the Song triplets are pretty adorable. Other than to brush up on our Korean, why else would we watch the award-winning TV show?!!

Anyway… we couldn’t help but draw inspiration from the stylish trio when thinking about kids swag from Seoul. This week’s kids look is a special curation of local Korean brands that offer gorgeous collections that, just like the triplets, are very hard to resist.

Shopping in Seoul

While getting to know the shopping scene in Seoul last December, we couldn’t help but notice how everyone was so stylishly dressed. A flash snow storm didn’t seem to stop fashionistas from being so effortlessly put together.

Inspired by what seemed to be the ‘local uniform’, we’ve caught the pretty pastel bug and have spent the last month or so stocking up on anything minimalist, harmonious and pastel. Here is our take on what we think will help you fit right in on the streets of this energetic city, especially on a cold and dry winter’s day.

Among all the hype of Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks… lies Hong Kong Fashion Week – the world’s second largest and Asia’s largest fashion event!

Stage to an overwhelming number of local and international designers and brands, Hong Kong may be the NY of the East with an abundance of everything, but it’s our duty to find you the cream of the crop. With ‘Fashion of Music’ as this year’s theme, the occasion was nothing short of spectacular. This fashion week we have selected four HK fashion designers that hit the runway at the 47th edition of Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2016, and stole our attention.

Partnering with Iris Mir across the 4-day fashion extravaganza, we present you with the next crop of Hong Kong brands that possess sensibility and skill. Scroll down to find out more about the Hong Kong brands you need to know, and their collections.

EFFIE  HUNG

RELAXED FEMININITY

What is great about Effie is that he understands women. His beautiful Fall/Winter collection of strong solids and colour myriads are constructed in silhouettes that flatter all body shapes, sizes, and complexions. It is made for modern day women who want to look and feel good in a tasteful way.

MIM MAK

ROMANTIC MONO

If you think monochrome is boring, think again. Models at Mim Mak’s successful fashion show sashayed down the runway in ultra romantic layers of tulle, cotton, and mesh (to name a few) that are intricately sewn to resemble a modern-day bride.

KEVIN HO

EDGY MODERNISM

Kevin’s Fall/Winter offering oozes edginess and sexiness. It’s like Versace and Balmain rolled into one, but with a unique Asian twist. We are obsessed with the high-impact details of his clothes – floor-length fringe, figure-flattering dress, and dangerously sexy necklines.

Kids Party Time

Dressing your kids in cool swag for school, a little day out, or a pyjama party becomes seemingly easier once you start to compare dressing them for a party… I can hear your yelps for help and see your giggles when your little one says… “Mum, I’ve got this under control I will dress myself for this party”. Moments later you are presented with styling that would be fit for only the most eclectic runway show… on Mars.

Because parties are a grand occasion in their little minds, and so much fun … at the end of the day we want our kids to be stylish and comfortable so they can enjoy the entertainment and activities, and not be bothered with a costume tear or broken tiara.

This week are are opting for happy colours, oh-so-cute accessories, and playful party hats, so your kids experience the joyous occasion rather than wardrobe malfunctions.
