If you’ve been to Jakarta, you will discover the city’s love for shopping malls – it is sprawling with grandiose and glitzy malls like Plaza Indonesia – not quite our style of local shopping. But do not let it’s touristy location or the line up of Cartier, Burberry and Lacroix put you off.
Just like the up-and-coming streets of Kemang, shopping in Plaza Indonesia hosts quite an array of local designers – from women’s fashion favourites, sleek menswear pieces, cool multi-label boutiques to irresistible furniture and home décor brands. In this guide to shopping in Plaza Indonesia, we’ve sieved out the best of the best in this 7-storey shopping mall.
Decidedly sleek menswear
A gem for all men, Adamist celebrates men who push the boundaries when it comes to fashion. So you won’t find one dull piece of clothing here. Decidedly sleek with a modern vibe, their pieces vary from shirts and T-shirts in monochromatic colours with intricate stitching, a mishmash of fabrics and edgy cuts. Whether you’re feeling like a party animal, a go-getter or a seductive stud, rest assured you will find an apt look at Adamist. This futuristic menswear label has made quite a mark in the industry and has even organised its first UK show at the Pure London trade show and the Fashion World Tokyo Men’s Fashion Expo in Japan.
Modern batik at its best
We can’t ignore a batik shop when we see one. Especially when in Indonesia. We were pleasantly surprised to come across Alleira Batik. The brand aims to conserve this age-old technique by fusing contemporary fashion with traditional Indonesian batik. And they’ve done a swell job at it. Alleira Batik now offers a variety of collections for modern men and women. Batik print jumpsuits, sundresses, A line skirts, oversized coats, loose-fitting dresses, T-shirts and shirts – you name it, they’ve got it.
From traditional to contemporary furniture and home décor
This furniture store is teeming with beautiful furniture and home decorative items from all over the world. The folks at Bika make sure these curated pieces are created with exceptional finishes and bold designs. Focusing on a mix of contemporary and traditional home décor, Bika carries a selection of the world’s most luxurious furniture and home décor brands like Bake Furniture, Rose et Marius, Rory Dodner, Akexandre Turpaud, just to name a few. Though the luxury brand boasts a six-storey lifestyle store in Kemang, the showroom at Plaza Indonesia is nothing short of extravagance and lushness.
Fun prints and patterns
Preppy with a slight hint of quirk is how we’d describe the fashion at Major Minor. The team is led by Ari Seputra, an award-winning designer with 26 years of experience in fashion, and his partner-in-crime, Ari who is a self-taught entrepreneur. Be prepared to find clean-cut women’s fashion items in eye-catching hues, fun scarves in luxurious silks and loads of interesting prints and patterns. Major Minor collaborates with Eko Nugroho, who is known for his iconic fish scales designs in its latest Spring/Summer 2016 collections.
Multi-label shoe and accessory boutique
“When your feet are comfortable, so is your body, mind and soul”. These are the words that Rococo lives by. Wise words indeed. This luxurious shoes and accessories boutique carries a wide range of high-end and contemporary brands for both men, women and kids. Spoil yourselves with their mix of casual to dressy flats, heels, wedges, sandals, loafers, high-cut sneakers and dress shoes from local to international brands like John Varvatos, Stuart Weitzman, Milly Mini, Manolo Blahnik…the list goes on.
Multi-concept store with the coolest indie brands
Dubbed as the mother of all multi-label shops in Jakarta, The Goods Dept. is perfect if you are looking for “all things cool under one roof”. The 1066 square metre space provides a unique retail environment, with carefully curated alternative fashion and lifestyle products from independent local designers to the coolest international brands. You will find everything from menswear and womenswear, accessories, unique homewares, bicycles, tech items and more. Once you’re indulged enough, take a break at the café and bar located at the centre of the store. And be sure to check out it’s Facebook page for rotating events like art exhibitions, film screening and fashion shows.
