Let's Talk: Incredible Women | 5 Minutes With | Travelshopa

This week we celebrated International Women’s Day (March 8), a day that traditionally honours the progress and achievements women have made in the world.

There are countless women who inspire us on a daily basis and we thought it would be meaningful to share some of these incredible women with you. Many of them are visionaries, lifting and empowering everyone around them with their brave and far-sighted goals. Many of them are also mothers, maintaining dual roles (sometimes more) while kicking down barriers and claiming their stake in the workplace.

Lean in as five regional fashion insiders and role models share what being a woman means to them and the advice they would give their younger selves.

Carline Darjanto | Indonesia

Co-Founder and Creative Director, COTTONINK

Carline Darjanto started casual Indonesian clothing brand COTTONINK with co-founder Ria Sarwono in 2008. Then a small e-shop selling printed tees and shawls, the brand has since grown into one of the most successful names to inhabit Indonesia’s e-commerce space. The brand is on a steep growth trajectory, opening its first offline store in Jakarta in 2015 and participating in Jakarta Fashion Week. COTTONINK aims to put Indonesia on the world map – playing against the ranks of fast-fashion powerhouses such as Sweden’s H&M and Japan’s Uniqlo. Carline most recently made waves across Asia when she received the honour of being featured in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list.

Elyn Wong | Singapore

Fashion Designer, Stolen

For someone who has had no formal fashion training, Elyn Wong has sure come a long way as a designer. Her label Stolen has attracted a cult following amongst Singapore’s fashion insiders and tastemakers, and is now sold in more than 5 countries around the world. Stolen began as a passion project for Elyn in 2007, while she was still creative group head at Ogilvy and Mather, before evolving into a full-time occupation in 2012. The brand stands as an ode to architecture and the feminine allure, eschewing overt detail and ornamentation in favour of clean and classical lines that frame an exposed back. Her accolades include being selected as the only fashion representative for Singapore: Inside Out and clinching a coveted spot in the Fashion Futures 2.0 programme, a business development initiative spearheaded by Singapore Fashion Week (SFW) in partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) where she will be one of the three selected designers to represent Singapore in the global market.

The woman who inspires me…

Being a woman means…

Strength and tenderness, beauty and pain, sacrifice and empowerment all at the same time.

Compassion over righteousness

Lenny Agustin | Indonesia

Fashion Designer, Lenny Agustin

Lenny Agustin shot to fashion stardom after winning an international bridal design competition in 2003. The youthful, pixie-faced designer is well loved for her colourful runway and ready-to-wear creations that incorporate the use of traditional Indonesian textiles and techniques. Lenny helms two lines of her own: her namesake label featuring cocktail and custom-made designs and Lennor, a more youthful trajectory for her ready-to-wear collection. Aside from her flair for design, Lenny dedicates considerable time to guidance and mentorship. She was appointed to the reformed Indonesian Fashion Chamber to expand and develop Indonesia’s fashion industry and offer support to fledgling designers.

The woman who inspires me…

Raden Ajeng Kartini. She was one of the first women that helped girls in Indonesia be able to attend school and to have an education. She is a very strong and smart woman with a great deal of confidence, and all of those things that she has in her heart inspired me.

Being a woman means…

I’m very grateful to be a woman because I feel very special. I could give birth and have a child of my own. I feel strong and I feel beautiful.

Words of wisdom to my younger self…

I would say “work harder to make your future better”.
