You’re out of the buzz stream if you’ve never been to Seminyak, Bali. Bali’s coolest suburb boasts a bar, hotel and shopping scene that no self-proclaimed leisure lover could pass up. Susanna Perini, founder of Biasa, has called the island home for 25 years. The stylish Italian hails from a family of couturiers, and has grown Biasa into a resort fashion label that’s prized for its sophistication and simplicity. Bali’s vibe…

Bali is proof that there is still paradise somewhere. It offers so many pockets of the real thing, a uniqueness forged by the people and their culture. It is an uncontaminated haven for those who appreciate the unbeaten path that bit more than others. Bali gifts us with a melange of cultural influences where great ideas are born in collaboration with foreign creativity.

Best way of getting around…

For me, there are only two options — Gojek or Helicopter!

Favourite thing about Bali…

The spirituality of the island and its people. The fact that Balinese understand the meaning of what is sacred without imposing on others who do not understand. In Bali, the invisible and the unseen is real; the spirit world is understood and respected along with the material world — the other ingredient to be stirred in to achieve life balance.

Least favourite thing about Bali…

The energy created by mass tourism and property speculation, the traffic and the plastic on the beaches.

One quirk that you’ve observed among the local people…

I love the Balinese sense of humour.

Best time to visit Bali…

Rainy season. The crowds dissipate and it’s when you’ll get to watch the best sunsets.

Best bit about your neighbourhood…

Bumping into the “Bali dinosaurs” — cosmic tribe members, chic hippies, intergalactic travellers, colourful elders and anyone who has resided on the island for more than 25 years fall into this category. They are virtually extinct!

A local phrase one should know…

Sing Gengken (don’t worry) or nenten kenapi (same in bahasa halus).

Favourite local shopping spot…

Papaya Fresh Gallery… I love the quirky jap vibe I feel through the racks!

Local shops in your black book…

Biku restaurant and store as it shows humour and an understanding of comfort from an ‘East meets West’ perspective. Home Mate for the feeling evoked by the tiny perfect details. Namu as it is a model for contemporary, effortless and casual glamour in Seminyak.

Bali’s best hidden gem…

I’m tempted to not disclose this but it’s Room 4 Dessert in Ubud. Will is the owner and molecular chef. He provides exceptional wit, refined New Yorkness, great unexpected flavours and unforgettable drinks.

One site a tourist should definitely visit…

Gunung Kawi — the 11th Century temple and funerary complex in Tampaksiring.

Bali’s most photogenic spot…

Anywhere where there are no tourists!

Best place to stay in Bali…

Villa Idanna in Sideman, a private house run by Alila.

The last good meal you had in Bali…

Shiro Sake / Sushi Bar, my Japanese favourite. I like them so much that I am willing to disclose the secret.

Where can we find you in your downtime…

At home
