Kanit Tantiwong on Downtown Bangkok | Insider's Guide | Travelshopa

Whether it’s discovering cultural gems or squaring off against the swarming crowds in the city, there’s no denying Bangkok’s grip on the senses. Downtown Bangkok — the capital’s throbbing heart — presents a cornucopia of shopping, dining and lifestyle options for the intrepid traveller. Kanit Tantiwong, founder of Container; a local label specialising in sublime leather carry-on goods is well acquainted with the local scene. We borrow his tips for a fun day out in the city.

Bangkok’s vibe…

Vibrant, chaotic and lively.

The thing that sets Bangkok apart from other cities in the region…

The city is buzzing with life at any time of the day.

Best way of getting around…

Skytrain and on foot

Favourite thing about Bangkok…

Bangkok’s beautiful bars and restaurants. And the food, of course.

Least favourite thing about Bangkok…

The walkways crammed with street vendors

One quirk that you’ve observed among the local people…

I think Thai people are very friendly and helpful to tourists. If you need help with directions or anything, don’t be shy to talk to them. Be patient with Thai-lish though.

Best time to visit Bangkok…

November till February

Best bit about your neighbourhood…

I live in the Ekkamai/Thonglor area which is well known for good local cafés and independent retail outlets. I like to support them.

A local phrase one should know…

Ped Mai? (Is it spicy?)

Favourite local shopping spot…

Siam Center as it features many shops by Thai talents

Local shops in your black book…

I usually go to The Selected (3rd floor Siam Center) to find gifts for friends and also Harnn at Siam Paragon to get aromatic products for my family.

Bangkok’s best hidden gem…

One of my most recent discoveries is the lounge bar at Ad Lib Hotel. It’s a beautiful and private space where one can enjoy a nice drink.

One site a tourist should definitely visit…

The Temple of Dawn… It’s completely mesmerising.

Bangkok’s most photogenic spot…

I like Santichai Prakan Park in old town overlooking the Chao Phraya River.

Best place to stay in Bangkok…

The Siam Hotel… It’s pricey but it’s worth it

The last good meal you had in Bangkok…

I just had Thai style BBQ chicken at Pirate Chambre. It’s just wonderful.

Where can we find you in your downtime…

I am all over the place in downtown. Perhaps on the skywalk?
