Michelle Boyce on Tiong Bahru, Singapore | Insider's Guide | Travelshopa

From nondescript little coffee shops to independent bookshops and specialty shops, the residential suburb of Tiong Bahru has a certain unscrubbed, low-key charm despite its well-known hipster status. We’ve enlisted Michelle Boyce – owner of the homewares store, Maissone, to show us around the shop-filled corridors and foodie haunts of Tiong Bahru, Singapore.

The style/vibe of Singapore…

Tiong Bahru is one of the oldest Art Deco housing estates in Singapore. It has a lively, hipster feel.

The thing that sets Singapore apart from other cities in the region…

Singapore is great city to bring up teenagers. It’s safe, carefree and impeccably clean.

Favourite thing about your city…

I love that we are 12 hours from home and 12 hours to our friends in Europe. Singapore is a fascinating melting pot for travellers, with good cafes and a seriously talented group of young creative locals.

Least favourite thing about your city…

Getting caught in the rain without my jandels. (Maori for flip-flops)

One quirk you’ve observed among the local people…

I love the smile from the little elderly lady who collects my cardboard everyday.

Best time to visit your city…

Singapore has a great vibe all year round

Where do you go to be inspired…

I am a magazine addict and love to browse the selection at Basheer Graphic Books, however we also have a whole new way of being inspired with things like blogs, tumblrs & my guilty pleasure: instagram.

Best bit about Tiong Bahru, Singapore…

I love that this area is the centre of everything I love – work, great coffee and cafes with a cool and trendy vibe.

Favourite local shopping area…

Tiong Bahru market for fresh flowers, kopi and fresh fish

Three local shops in your black book…

The French Bookshop

Curated Records

The Floral Atelier

One local hidden gem…

Bincho – a fashionably hip cocktail and Yakitori bar.

One site a tourist should definitely visit…

One should definitely explore the Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail.

Best place to stay in Singapore…

In Tiong Bahru, it would be the Wangz Boutique Hotel for sure.

Where can we find you in your downtime…

My favorite pastimes definitely revolve around the foodie scene in my neighborhood like The Tiong Bahru Club Singapura or at home in Sentosa on the deck with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc
