Rhiannon Hills from Danish Design on Pasir Panjang, Singapore | Insider's Guide | Travelshopa

Now, most locals will tell you that they hardly venture to this part of town. Such a pity, for Pasir Panjang is a largely untrodden haven for furniture and vintage hunting. As local insider, Rhiannon Hills will tell you. Her years at the helm of Scandinavian furniture sanctuary – Danish Design have armed her with an inimitable eye for design. Should you want to take a leaf from her book, check out her tips and recommendations for a joyful jaunt around Pasir Panjang, Singapore.

The style/vibe of Singapore…

My family and I now see Singapore as our home. It is a truly multicultural city where style and diversity are prominent. It is safe and fun with a great community spirit and naturally, wonderful food!

The thing that sets Singapore apart from other cities in the region…

The people. In Singapore, the vast majority is welcoming and engaged. Singaporeans love to chat in taxis, in lifts, on the street, in shops at every opportunity. I meet new people every day and enjoy talking to people from a wide variety of backgrounds and a wide range of experiences. It is this interest in life and understanding others that sets Singapore apart.

Favourite thing about your city…

In addition to the people, it is the Singaporean accent that reminds me of my birth country, Wales. In my view, Singaporeans have a slight Welsh accent and I love that. I find it warm and welcoming. I also love the fact that more and more people in Singapore search out style and approach their purchases thoughtfully by thinking about how things are made and the ethics in brands.

Least favourite thing about your city…

The middle of the day heat… But as the saying goes: ‘only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun!’

One quirk you’ve observed among the local people…

The love of food is universal! Looking for the best lunch place, discussing dinner – it’s a great quirk!

Best time to visit Singapore…

I love Christmas, the weather is normally good and the decorations are excellent. I particularly love the outdoor “ice” rinks that appear occasionally! There is also a lot going on around the Christmas period.

Where do you go to be inspired…

The Singapore Botanic Gardens. These are well kept and stunning. I love the concerts held through the years – such a great venue.

Best bit about Pasir Panjang, Singapore…

The friendly feel and range of businesses that have grown up over the years. We have expanded from a small showroom of 1,500 square feet to over 9,000 square feet of Scandinavian design. It is the support of this neighborhood that has made it possible. Our building has gorgeous high ceilings and stunning floors. Surrounding the building are long-established smaller businesses from the hardware shops (who refuse to sell me anything until we have had a long discussion on how I will be using it!) to the great food stalls.

A local phrase one should know…

Shiok! Sums up Singapore’s love of food and life.

Your favourite local shopping area…

Vivocity – it is close by Danish Designs and you can literally find almost anything that you need! The place is huge.

The local spots in your black book…

The food centre behind Pasir Panjang MRT – there is a great range of local food. Be sure to try the BBQ seafood.

On The Table is a relatively new café opposite Pasir Panjang MRT – the ambience and food is good.

Nakhon Kitchen serves affordable Thai cuisine and you can see snaking queues during lunchtime every day!

Pasir Panjang’s best hidden gem…

The many different range of furniture and home decoration stores that scatter this small area. Our Danish Design store offers renowned designs and famous brands and sits amongst a range of antique furniture stores, locally made and home-designed ranges of outdoor furniture and sofas as well as nicely chosen accessory ranges. We are also close to Expat Auctions and I love to see ‘second life’ furniture being given a new lease of life.

Which one site should a tourist definitely visit?

The Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Best place to stay in Singapore…

The W Hotel. It is a great location with top-notch service and our fabulous Stingray Rocking Chairs are in most W Hotels around the world.

Where can we find you in your downtime?

Relaxing with the family and our dog on Tanjong Beach or playing tennis at the British Club.
