Whether you’re into jeans (flared, skinny or bootleg – we don’t judge), cut-offs or the newly revived denim skirt, denim is a fabric guaranteed to already be a staple in your wardrobe. That’s why we love the massively popular trend of denim on denim. Spotted on every fashionista and fashion blogger from Olivia Palermo to Leandra Medine, it’s hard to find a reason not to try it out yourself. Lucky for us this trend isn’t just limited to winter or fall and is easily adaptable to our tropical climate.

WHITE DENIM

The most overlooked of the denim staples is white denim. Not only is it hugely fashionable (case in point an all white ensemble with ripped white jeans) but it is also great for our tropical climate as it doesn’t absorb as much heat as other denim. White denim is perfect for anyone who is looking to rock the subtle denim on denim trend. Teaming white denim cut offs or distressed jeans with a chambray shirt, is a great way to look relaxed and casual and still fashionable. You could even try it the other way around. A white denim jacket, matched with a blue or dark denim bottom, creates an easy alternative to a shawl when popping in and out of air con all day.

DENIM SKIRT

While denim skirts have long been associated with tasteless or unfashionable looks, they have had a revival and have been vamped up; thanks to a slit up the leg and the mid thigh length. A skirt is a great alternative to the standard shorts look that we can easily fall into in the tropics. A blue denim skirt looks great with a tucked in denim shirt, a black belt and a pair of plain heels or sandals. Play around with tonal denim, for example a dark blue denim skirt with a light blue or chambray shirt. By mixing the tones of the denim you create a much more interesting and chic look.

CLASSIC DENIM ON DENIM

Sometimes it’s important to stick with old favourites. That’s why it’s hard to beat rocking a good pair of jeans with denim on the top. We love dark jeans paired with a loose open denim shirt and a white tank underneath. This combo gives off the ‘oh so stylish yet I put no effort into looking this good look’ that every fashionista craves. With denim on denim it’s hard to go wrong with layers. If you’re bold enough, try matching your jeans with a denim jacket in a different colour/tonal wave of denim and a light blue layer underneath you’re bound to look fantastic…The only problem – endless summer and the risk of overheating in this look, but hey as they say pain (or sweat in our case) is a small price to pay to look fantastic.
