If the busy city life of Sydney is tiring you out, as it does to the best of us, why not take a short day trip down to the South of Sydney? It may not have the vibrancy of Sydney’s city centre but you will find two quaint little towns. Shopping in Austinmer and Thirroul offer some charming boutiques for fashion, homewares and gifts. To get there, take the Princes Highway or embark on a relaxing scenic drive through the Royal National Park. Or if you’re heading down south to the coast, these shopping spots make for great pit stops as well!

It’s near impossible not to feel at home in Wattlebird, with its pastel fabrics, quirky home wares and warm ambience. Every piece in the boutique exudes a strong Australian feel, which only makes sense since most products sold there are locally made and designed by true blue Australians. We especially love that they encourage customers to purchase their upcycled furniture and offer upholstery services – but that’s just a plus to their well-designed fabrics, gifts and homewares by the likes of local labels Ficitonal Objects, Trunk + Orderly, Down to the Woods, Blink Designs and Lisa Corti.

Despite having a busy and successful career as a casting director and taking care of two boisterous children, Anousha Zarkesh somehow found time to open Mala Beads, a lovely jewellery store in Austinmer that offers beaded necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories designed by Anousha’s own mother. The pair travels the world looking for exotic beads, resulting in creative pieces unlike any other.

If there were just one word that comes to mind when you step into Haveli, it would have to be: “eclectic”. The multi-label boutique stocks high-quality homewares, fashion, jewellery, shawls and gifts sourced from around the world. Labels carried include Anokhi, an Indian label specialising in hand-block printed cotton clothing and homewares, Jump Clothing, a contemporary fashion label for the stylish woman, and Cannisse, a label from the South of France that uses natural fibres and fabrics.

For a rather international selection of clothes, jewellery, gifts and homewares, Ekho is a great find, with items sourced from all over the world, particularly Australia, Africa, Japan and other parts of Asia. Don’t be surprised if you see a kimono-inspired garb hanging on the racks right next to a Western-designed dress that oozes a contemporary elegance. They also offer handmade jewellery by small, independent designers, CDs of all genres, and homewares such as hand-blown glass, lamps, Japanese ceramics and handmade rugs.
