Think shopping in Singapore, and a myriad of shopping strips and malls spread around the island immediately comes to mind. But hidden away in Kampong Glam is Haji Lane, a small alley filled with independent designer stores that have thrilled the likes of Gwen Stefani. Your local shopping trip in Singapore simply wouldn’t be complete without a stop at this much-loved alley.
Haji Lane may have evolved from a clustered street of rundown shophouses into a trendy alley bustling with upcoming local designers, entrepreneurs and shoppers, but make no mistake, the artful Peranakan architecture isn’t the only thing that lives on from its past. The lane still retains the charm of a tight-knit community, or as the locals call it: the ‘Kampung’ Spirit, where storeowners and shop managers alike cheerfully greet shoppers and support one another just as a small community should.
Along with its fun, upbeat atmosphere, you’ll find quality bargains in cutting edge fast fashion at great prices. Should you not have all day to meander through the dozens of shops and browse through all their fashions and wares, here is our guide to shopping in Haji Lane featuring some of our favourite stores.
Trinkets and goodies made by local designers
You may be overwhelmed by the surfeit of everything from little trinkets to jewellery as you step into the shop. But do not be discouraged. After a second glance, you’ll find that the treasure trove is brimming with things you never knew you needed – greeting cards, miniature vintage toys, hair accessories, fashion accessories, jewellery and locally inspired goodies – it’s a stellar mix. The motive behind Craft Assembly is to give a platform to local designers to showcase their items. The team also changes the mix of vendors every now and then so each trip to Craft Assembly will be as exciting as the next.
COLOURFUL HANDCRAFTED ACCESSORIES
Where in Singapore can you find traditional, handcrafted bags, accessories and hammocks from Colombia? Well, probably no where – except at Kolombiana. Kolombiana imports handmade items made by an indigenous Colombian tribe called the Wayuu, woven with traditional techniques and patterns. You will find bright, colourful patterns inspired by nature, such as the sun and flora commonly found in South America.
TRENDY, CUTTING-EDGE FASHION
Discover one of Singapore’s independent fashion labels that focuses on indie, quirky pieces as well as creative, edgy clothing designs. The name says it all! Shopping at Modparade will certainly get you ready for a fashion parade, with cutting edge designs that challenge the status quo. If your style leans more towards sticking out in a crowd rather than blending in, then Modparade is definitely the shop for you!
SCANDI-STYLE HOMEWARES AND GIFTS
Taking the place of indie boutique Wicked Laundry is Mondays Off, a cool store full of hidden treasures. Homewares, gifts, garden merchandise, tote bags, books, bags, cushions – you name it, they’ve got it. Discover Japanese and Scandinavian-inspired items sourced from all corners of the globe, as well as sustainable products by local artisans, and many many other incredible items – we simply can’t rave enough about this shop!
Not your usual salad shop
No, you will not be getting a healthy lunch here. Instead, Salad Shop offers something even better – a great shopping experience. The store interior adopts an industrial-meets-minimal look with crisp white walls greeting smooth cemented floors. Their mix includes everything quirky to chic. Scandinavian inspired home décor you wish your home had as well as humble selection of women’s apparel and accessories. If you’re looking for a gift, you’ve come to the right place. We also came across cheeky greeting cards and tote bags. Oh, and don’t forget to head up to the second floor for more irresistible pieces.
Elegance at its best
This contemporary womenswear label exudes elegance and confidence. Led by founder and designer Tricia Ong, the pieces at Vain Glorious You brings forth key elements like confidence, boldness and determination in their design aesthetic. The result is a show-stopping range of seasonal dresses, skirts, tops, shoes and jewellery. The team also makes it a point to change the look and feel of the boutique to give visitors a different experience every time they pop by. If you are looking for something a little more extravagant, Swan By VGY is a premium line from the label which encompasses season on season designer collectives with distinctive focal themes.
